One thing before anything else: our propolis capsules are made for diffusers. They are not supplements, and they are not meant to be swallowed. The word “capsule” naturally suggests something you take by mouth, so it’s worth saying clearly at the start. If you’re looking for products to take orally, you’ll find those in our throat sprays and tinctures.

If you own a PropolAir diffuser, or you’re thinking about getting one, this guide is for you. It explains what’s inside a capsule, what each of our six blends is like, how long a capsule lasts, why they cost what they do, and which one suits which room. There’s also one important rule for owners of the Propol Therapy A4, covered below.

What Is a Propolis Diffuser Capsule?

A diffuser capsule is a single-use refill that sits inside a PropolAir diffuser. The diffuser warms it gently, to the temperature at which the volatile, aromatic part of the propolis evaporates. That aroma then spreads through the room.

There’s no flame, no smoke, and no water. Just gentle warmth and a capsule that has been designed for that exact job. The boxes themselves are marked for exclusive use with diffusers.

Each box contains 5 capsules, and each capsule lasts up to 122 hours.

What’s Inside: How Our Capsules Are Made

Here’s what we can tell you with confidence about what goes into a capsule, and where it comes from.

The propolis. Every capsule is made with certified organic Italian propolis, sourced by our manufacturer, Kontak, from unpolluted Alpine apiaries and certified free from pesticides, heavy metals and antibiotics. Kontak holds organic certification under EU Regulation 2018/848, issued by BIOS Srl. Our guide to what a propolis organic certificate actually means explains what that guarantees, and what it doesn’t.

The blends. Three different formulations are used across the six capsules:

  • 100% propolis: nothing but organic Italian propolis.
  • 95% propolis and 5% Boswellia: propolis with Boswellia Serrata (Frankincense).
  • 80% propolis and 20% essential oils: propolis with a blend of organic essential oils, which is what gives the four aromatic blends their character.

The diffusion system. Kontak describes the diffusion system as patented. It’s designed to reproduce, indoors, what happens in a woodland when warm sunlight releases the volatile fraction of tree resins into the air. The diffuser holds the capsule at the temperature the formulation needs, so the aroma is released steadily rather than all at once.

Single use. The capsule is for single use only. Once the active volatile part has been released, it’s done, and the diffuser needs to be reset when you fit the next one.

The manufacturing process itself belongs to Kontak, so we’d rather not guess at details we can’t verify. If there’s something specific you’d like to know, contact us and we’ll find out.

The Six Blends

All six work in every diffuser in our range. The differences are in the aroma, and in the moment each one suits best.

1. Pure Organic Propolis

Made from nothing but organic Italian propolis. This is the simplest, most uncompromised blend in the range.

When gently warmed in your PropolAir diffuser, the capsule releases the natural volatile compounds of the resin into the room, filling the space with a subtle honey-resin aroma. It is the quietest of the six — more of a background note than a scent you notice.

Best for: everyday use, anyone who prefers a quiet background aroma, and anyone who would rather have no added essential oils.

Suitable for the Therapy A4 aerosol programme: yes.

Suitable for all other diffusers, including Therapy A4 room programm: yes.

2. Propolis + Boswellia

95% propolis with 5% Boswellia serrata, the resin better known as frankincense.

When gently warmed by your PropolAir diffuser, the capsule releases a warm, balsamic vapour. The rich, woody notes of frankincense sit alongside the honey-balsam aroma of propolis, giving a deeper and more grounded character than the pure capsule.

Best for: quiet evenings, reflective spaces, meditation and yoga.

Suitable for the Therapy A4 aerosol programme: yes.

Suitable for all other diffusers, including Therapy A4 room programm: yes.

3. Breath

Organic Italian propolis with an alpine trio of essential oils: eucalyptus, mountain pine and spruce.

When gently heated, it releases a deep, resinous pine-forest note. The cool, camphoraceous character of eucalyptus leads, with mountain pine and spruce behind it, giving something close to the air of a high-altitude woodland. It is the crispest of the six.

Best for: the colder months, and any time you want a sharper, more resinous note in the room.

Suitable for the Therapy A4 aerosol programme: no.

Suitable for all other diffusers, including Therapy A4 room programm: yes.

4. Repell

Propolis with geranium, lemongrass and peppermint — the botanicals traditionally chosen for rooms in the warmer months.

Gently heated, it disperses an invigorating fragrance dominated by punchy lemongrass and cool peppermint, grounded by sweet, herbaceous geranium. It is the brightest of the six, and the one our customers reach for with the windows open.

Best for: warmer months, open windows, and covered patios.

Suitable for the Therapy A4 aerosol programme: no.

Suitable for all other diffusers, including Therapy A4 room programm: yes.

5. Purify

Propolis with three of the most aromatic cleansing botanicals: tea tree, thyme and lemon.

On warming, it diffuses a sharp, herbal-citrus fragrance. Tea tree and thyme give a robust herbal base, balanced by the bright, zesty freshness of lemon — which is what makes this the usual choice for a kitchen.

Best for: kitchens, busy rooms, and anywhere you want a crisp, fresh note.

Suitable for the Therapy A4 aerosol programme: no.

Suitable for all other diffusers, including Therapy A4 room programm: yes.

6. Relax

Propolis with lavender, Arolla pine and sweet orange.

As the capsule warms, it fills the room with a comforting, balsam-floral bouquet. Lavender brings its familiar presence, Arolla pine a tranquil woodland note, and sweet orange a delicate, uplifting warmth. It is the gentlest of the four scented blends.

Best for: evenings, bedrooms, and winding down at the end of the day.

Suitable for the Therapy A4 aerosol programme: no.

Suitable for all other diffusers, including Therapy A4 room programm: yes.

An Important Note for Propol Therapy A4 Owners

The Propol Therapy A4 has two programmes: a room programme, and an aerosol programme that is used through an adult or child mask.

For the aerosol programme (mask use), only use the 100% Pure Organic Propolis capsule or the Propolis + Boswellia capsule.

The four essential oil blends (Breath, Repell, Purify and Relax) are formulated for room diffusion only, and must not be used with the masks. This applies to adults and children alike.

In room programme, every blend works as normal. The restriction applies only to the masks. If you use the A4 for both, it’s simplest to keep a box of 100% Pure or Propolis + Boswellia on hand for mask sessions, and choose any blend you like for the room.

Extra or replacement masks, adult and child size, are available in our propolis diffuser masks category.

How Long Does a Capsule Last?

Each capsule lasts up to 122 hours of use. In practice, that’s:

  • roughly 5 days of continuous, round-the-clock use, or
  • roughly 15 days at 8 hours a day.

A box of five gives you up to 610 hours, which is roughly 25 days of round-the-clock use, or around 76 days at 8 hours a day.

What happens when a capsule is finished. When the active volatile part has been released, the diffuser beeps to let you know. On the Propol Therapy A4, the sound alert can be switched off for quiet nights.

Why a finished capsule doesn’t look empty. Non-volatile natural material, such as beeswax, stays inside the capsule, so it can still look a quarter to three-quarters full. That’s normal. The aroma and the aromatic compounds have already been released, even though the capsule doesn’t look empty. So if you’ve ever wondered whether you’re wasting a capsule by replacing it when the diffuser beeps, you’re not. Trust the beep, not the appearance.

And the other way round: a capsule that looks empty isn’t necessarily finished. Some customers tell us that after around 8 hours of use the capsule looked empty, even though the diffuser hadn’t signalled anything. How a capsule looks isn’t a reliable guide in either direction. The diffuser’s own signal is: when a capsule has completed its cycle, the diffuser flashes and beeps every 10 seconds, so if you haven’t seen or heard that, the capsule hasn’t finished. On models with indicator lights, the lights also show how much of the cycle remains. If a new capsule seems to run out unusually quickly, check that the diffuser was reset when you fitted it, and get in touch if you’re unsure.

Resetting the diffuser. The box instructions say the diffuser needs to be reset each time a capsule is replaced. Check your diffuser’s manual for exactly how.

Why Do Capsules Cost What They Do?

It’s a fair question, and the honest answer has several parts:

  • There’s very little propolis to begin with. A beekeeper can usually harvest only around 50–150 g of propolis from a hive in a year, roughly the weight of a bar of chocolate. It’s one of the scarcest products a hive produces.
A beekeeper in a protective suit carefully scraping organic propolis from a beehive frame in a pristine Alpine landscape with mountain peaks. On a wooden hive in the foreground, a glass jar of raw resin and golden propolis diffuser capsules sit in the sunlight.
  • It’s certified organic. That means controlled hive locations, restricted treatments, and independent inspection, all of which cost more than conventional production.
  • It comes from remote Alpine apiaries. Sourcing away from industry and intensive farming limits the options, and it’s a large part of what makes organic certification realistic in the first place.
  • The blends use organic essential oils, which cost more than conventional ones.
  • It’s a designed system. Each capsule is engineered to release its aroma at the temperature the diffuser provides, which is different from simply putting a scented product on a heater.

The most useful number is cost per day. Divide the price of a box by 76 for an idea of what it costs to run a diffuser for 8 hours a day, or by 25 if you run it around the clock. That gives you a fairer picture than the price of the box on its own.

As always, price reflects how something is sourced and made. It isn’t a claim about effect.

Where to Use Them: Home, Work and Nurseries

We describe capsules by aroma and atmosphere, rather than by effects, so here’s what each setting tends to gain from a diffuser.

At Home

A diffuser gives a home a background aroma and a small daily ritual. Many people run one in the living room through the evening, in a home office through the working day, or in a hallway to welcome people in.

  • Living room: Breath in the colder months, or Propolis + Boswellia for a quieter evening.
  • Bedroom: Relax, or the subtle 100% Pure.
  • Kitchen: Purify, for a crisp, clean note.
  • Home office: Breath or Purify, for a fresher feel through a long working day.

At Work

Most of our diffusers cover up to 35 m², while the models with a fan, including the L3 and the Propol Therapy A4, cover up to 60 m². That makes them practical for a reception area, a meeting room, a small office or a consultation room.

  • Reception or waiting area: a calm, welcoming aroma such as Propolis + Boswellia or 100% Pure.
  • Meeting rooms and offices: Purify or Breath, for a fresh, clean feel.
  • Open-plan spaces: check the coverage of your model, and choose one with a fan for larger rooms.

If a space is shared, a gentle, widely agreeable aroma such as 100% Pure is usually the safest starting point.

In a Nursery or Kindergarten

Our Propolina range of bee-shaped diffusers was designed for nurseries, children’s bedrooms and playrooms, with a soft night light, and ioniser-free options (P1 and P3). Our guide to propolis for the whole family covers the range in detail.

For capsule choice in spaces with young children, we’d suggest starting simply:

  • The 100% Pure Organic Propolis capsule is the simplest choice, since it contains no added essential oils.
  • If you’d like to use an essential oil blend around young children, check the manufacturer’s guidance first and speak to a pharmacist or GP. Some essential oils, such as peppermint and eucalyptus, are generally not recommended around babies and very young children.
  • Keep capsules out of reach. They’re not food, and they shouldn’t be handled by small children.
  • In a nursery, school or other childcare setting, check the setting’s own policies before introducing any diffuser.

Which Capsule Should You Choose?

Would you rather be asked?

Two questions, and we will point you to the blend that suits your room.

How to Use a Propolis Diffuser Capsule

  1. Insert one capsule into your diffuser.
  2. Switch the diffuser on to begin gentle heat diffusion. On the A4, choose your programme (room or aerosol) from the menu.
  3. When the diffuser beeps, replace the capsule and reset the diffuser.
  4. Never reuse a capsule. Each one is for single use only.

Always check your diffuser’s manual for exact instructions, since it’s the final word on settings and use.

Do They Fit Every Diffuser?

All six capsules fit every diffuser in our PropolAir range, whether it’s basic, ioniser, fan, wood or bee-shaped. They are made for PropolAir diffusers, and the boxes are marked for exclusive use with diffusers, so we wouldn’t recommend them for other brands. Our guide to the types of propolis diffuser compares the models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are propolis capsules for swallowing?

No. Our propolis capsules are single-use refills for PropolAir diffusers, and are not meant to be swallowed. Our oral products are the throat sprays and tinctures.

How long does a propolis diffuser capsule last?

Up to 122 hours: roughly 5 days of continuous use, or about 15 days at 8 hours a day.

Why does the capsule still look full when my diffuser beeps?

Natural material such as beeswax stays inside the capsule once the active aromatic part has been released, so it can still look a quarter to three-quarters full. The beep is the signal to follow.

Which capsules can I use with the Propol Therapy A4’s masks?

Only the 100% Pure Organic Propolis capsule and the Propolis + Boswellia capsule. Breath, Repell, Purify and Relax are for room diffusion only.

Which capsule is best for a child’s room?

The 100% Pure Organic Propolis capsule is the simplest choice, since it has no added essential oils. If you’d like to use an essential oil blend, check the manufacturer’s guidance and ask a pharmacist or GP first.

Can I use these capsules in a diffuser from another brand?

They’re made for PropolAir diffusers, and the boxes are marked for exclusive use with diffusers, so we don’t recommend it.

Can I reuse a capsule?

No. Each capsule is for single use only.

How many capsules are in a box?

Five. Each diffuser also comes with one capsule to get you started.

Are your capsules organic?

Yes. They’re made with certified organic Italian propolis, and the essential oil blends use organic essential oils.

Do all six blends fit every PropolAir diffuser?

Yes, every blend fits every diffuser in our range. The only restriction is for the A4’s mask programme, covered above.
